  2. OVERVIEW
  3. --------
  4.     UZBlank is a screen blanking program designed specifically for
  5. power-managed laptop computers running MS Windows 3.x, although it can
  6. also be used with desktop systems.  In contrast to existing screen
  7. savers, whose main purpose is to save the screen pixels from wearing
  8. out, and to provide some entertainment value, UZBlank's purpose is to
  9. save power on the laptop, by blanking the screen when it has been idle
  10. for a configurable period of time.  It has been designed to be at least
  11. as good as the default MS Windows screen saver. There are several
  12. features of UZBlank which distinguish it from other screen savers:
  13.  
  14. - UZBlank uses the Advanced Power Management (APM) features of modern
  15.   laptop computers to power off devices (eg. the display) when running
  16.   in battery-operated mode, in order to save power. Since APM is still
  17.   fairly recent, not all laptops have the most powerful APM features.
  18.   UZBlank will try the most power-efficient strategy for your system.
  19.  
  20. - UZBlank does not waste CPU cycles (which consume power!) when
  21.   operating in battery-operated mode. It does not display any fancy
  22.   graphics, because they also waste display power.
  23.  
  24. - UZBlank incorporates password-protected screen locking functionality
  25.   which automatically locks the screen after a selectable amount of time
  26.   after blanking or being suspended (partially powered off), or always on
  27.   resume. This prevents other people from seeing your data, if you are
  28.   forced to leave your laptop in unsecured areas. In addition, if your
  29.   laptop has password protection at the ROM BIOS level, there is
  30.   effectively no way to access the computer short of dismantling it
  31.   (draining the battery does not help if your ROM BIOS password is in
  32.   NVRAM!). This thwarts casual unwanted access at your data by other
  33.   people.
  34.  
  35. - UZBlank has a more insensitive mouse unblanking mechanism, for those
  36.   (frequent) situations where the laptop is being moved around (as in
  37.   an airplane, train, etc).
  38.  
  39. INSTALLATION
  40. ------------
  41.     There are many ways to install UZBlank, and one simple alternative
  42. is to follow these instructions:
  43.  
  44. 1) Make a separate directory (using mkdir from the DOS prompt) and copy
  45.    the files from your distribution medium (either extract it from a
  46.    downloaded archive file (PKZIP, LHARC, ZOO, ...), or copy from the
  47.    diskette) into that directory.  It is highly recommended to install
  48.    into a newly created directory, so that you can easily upgrade or
  49.    uninstall later.
  50.  
  51.    NOTE: if you have a previous version of UZBlank, we still recommend
  52.    installing into a new directory. For example, if you named the old
  53.    directory UZBLANK, you can rename it to UZBLANK.OLD. After having
  54.    installed the new software, copy the old license file (eg.
  55.    UZBLANK.OLD\UZBLANK.LIC ) to the freshly installed directory.
  56.    This will save you the time (and cost!) of reregistering the software.
  57.  
  58. 2) if you have not done so already, create a new program item in the
  59.    "Startup" program group, so that UZBlank starts running when Windows
  60.    starts. You can do this in the Program Manager either by
  61.  
  62.    a) dragging the "UZBlank" executable file from the File Manager into
  63.       the "Startup" program group (consult your Windows manual);
  64.    or by
  65.    a) restoring the "Startup" program group (for example, by double-clicking
  66.       on its icon). If you do not have a "Startup" program group, you can
  67.       add the the new program to any of the other program groups; and
  68.    b) choosing the "File" and "New..." menu entry of the Program Manager.
  69.       Choose "Program item" and hit "OK".  Set its "Description" to
  70.       "UZBlank", its "Command Line" to "uzblank" and its working directory
  71.       to the directory where you installed the UZBlank files. When you are
  72.       done, the "UZBlank" icon should be in the currently selected program
  73.       group.
  74.  
  75. 3) disable any existing screen savers (including any previous version of
  76.    UZBlank), either through the Desktop icon in the Control Panel (set
  77.    the "Screensaver" item to "None"), or explicitely by closing them. If
  78.    you start your other screensaver (for example, IdleWild) from
  79.    WIN.INI, you'll have to disable it by using the System Editor to
  80.    remove it from the "load=" line.
  81.  
  82. 4) double-click on the UZBlank icon, or restart Windows (to verify that
  83.    it works).  UZBlank is started when its icon shows at the bottom of
  84.    the desktop.
  85.  
  86.     To uninstall UZBlank in the event you are not going to use it,
  87. simply reverse the steps above, that is:
  88.  
  89. 1) stop running the UZBlank program.
  90.  
  91. 2) remove the program item from any program group that you added it to.
  92.  
  93. 3) remove the files from the directory where you copied them to.
  94.  
  95. 4) reenable the old screen saver, if you had one.
  96.  
  97.  
  98. USAGE
  99. -----
  100.     UZBlank runs purely as an icon, with 3 additional menu options
  101. in its System menu. These options are displayed and selectable when you
  102. single-click the left mouse button on its (running) icon.
  103.  
  104. - The "About" menu option displays version and licensing information.
  105.  
  106. - The "Settings" option allows to configure several parameters:
  107.  
  108.     - "Blank time"
  109.       specifies the number of minutes of inactivity after which
  110.       UZBlank will blank the screen. This is merely an indication to
  111.       the user that the system has been idle for a while.
  112.  
  113.       On any input (mouse or keyboard), the original display is
  114.       immediately restored, unless the screen has been locked as
  115.       described below.
  116.  
  117.       The recommended setting is 1 minute.
  118.  
  119.     - "Display standby time"
  120.       specifies the number of minutes of idleness that UZBlank will
  121.       try to power manage the display.  If your laptop is capable,
  122.       then (only) the display will be powered off (to conserve
  123.       battery life).
  124.  
  125.       On any input (mouse or keyboard), the original display is
  126.       immediately restored, unless the screen has been locked as
  127.       described below.
  128.  
  129.       The recommended setting is 2 minutes.
  130.  
  131.     - "Global suspend time"
  132.       specifies the number of minutes of idleness until UZBlank will
  133.       suspend the entire system, but ONLY IF it is currently running
  134.       on battery power. In this mode, the laptop uses the least
  135.       amount of power, and you are able to (almost) instantaneously
  136.       power it up. This is equivalent to you pressing the "Suspend"
  137.       button on your laptop (or equivalent, please read your
  138.       manual), and no programs will run in this condition.
  139.  
  140.       You can resume by hitting the "Restore" button (if your system
  141.       has one, or the "Suspend" button again), and the original
  142.       display is restored, unless the screen has been locked as
  143.       described below.
  144.  
  145.       The recommended setting is 3 minutes, unless you often run
  146.       programs unattended while on battery power, in which case you
  147.       want to make this number bigger.
  148.  
  149.     - "Unblank on Mouse Move"
  150.       allows you to select whether to restore the blanked screen
  151.       with the mouse or not. Even though UZBlank already has an
  152.       insensitive mouse unblanking mechanism, you may want to
  153.       disable this if your mouse still is sensitive, or you are
  154.       using your computer in an environment that make you move the
  155.       mouse inadvertently.
  156.  
  157.       The recommended setting is to select this item.
  158.  
  159.     - "Password >>" 
  160.       pressing this button brings up the Password Locking options
  161.       described below.
  162.  
  163.     - "Lock time"
  164.       specifies the number of minutes of idleness until UZBlank will
  165.       lock the screen. You will be forced to enter a password if you
  166.       want to access your screen. This feature is also enabled if
  167.       your computer has been suspended for the specified amount of
  168.       time (regardless or not whether it was idle at the time of
  169.       being suspended).
  170.  
  171.       You can resume by entering the password.  The only other way
  172.       to get into the system is by powering it off. If your laptop
  173.       has a ROM BIOS password (as most do nowadays), your system
  174.       can only be accessed by someone knowlegeable dismantling it.
  175.       If you are concerned, contact your laptop vendor and get the
  176.       details!
  177.  
  178.       The recommended setting is 60 minutes, unless you operate in
  179.       an unsecure environment, in which case you want to make this
  180.       smaller.
  181.  
  182.     - "Password"
  183.       and "Verify password" text items allow you to select your
  184.       password. You will have to type the same password in both
  185.       fields.
  186.  
  187.       UZBlank will not lock the screen, if you have not set your
  188.       password!
  189.  
  190.       We recommend that you select the same password as your ROM
  191.       BIOS password, or choose another well-remembered, yet not
  192.       easily guessed-at string. If you ever forget your password,
  193.       you'll have to turn off the computer, and reset it again.
  194.  
  195.       NOTE: be careful about your "Caps Lock" key, as the password
  196.             is case-sensitive.
  197.  
  198.     - "Lock on Resume"
  199.       this option enforces password locking on every resume from
  200.       suspended mode, regardless of the other parameters. Use this
  201.       if you are in a very unsecure environment.
  202.  
  203.       The recommended setting is off.
  204.  
  205. - The "Lock now" menu option allows you to lock the screen immediately.
  206. You can use this if you expect to be away from your computer and don't
  207. want people looking at your data.
  208.  
  209. LIMITATIONS
  210. -----------
  211.     Due to "features" of the Windows environment, UZBlank has the
  212. following limitations:
  213.  
  214. - it will not blank if a window of the class "tty" is active, such as
  215.   any Non-Windows Application in a Program Manager program item. This
  216.   is the same behaviour as the default Windows screen saver mechanism,
  217.   but we are working on it.
  218.   NOTE: the password locking feature will work on power-up from the
  219.   suspended state regardless of whether a Non-Windows application is
  220.   active in "windowed" mode.
  221.  
  222. - it will not control the system while a Non-Windows Application is
  223.   running in "Full-Screen mode". In particular, the password-locking
  224.   feature will not work while the full-screen application is running.
  225.   We recommend to run Non-Windows Applications in "Windowed" mode, as
  226.   controlled through the PIF Editor application.
  227.  
  228. - the (malicious) intruder can always power off the system, so if your
  229.   PC does not have a boot-time password, UZBlank only prevents casual
  230.   access at the data (ie. without you knowing it). If your boot-time
  231.   password lives in memory powered by the battery, the intruder will be
  232.   forced to drain the battery (either wait a long time, or dismantle the
  233.   PC; I am purposefully omitting details here) If you care about this,
  234.   ask your PC vendor to give you decent protection for your PC with a
  235.   boot-time password in NVRAM!
